Galvanized Steel Coil vs Color Coated Steel Coil: Which Route Fits Roofing Orders?
For roofing sheet, wall cladding, roll forming, and Metal Tile orders,Galvanized Steel Coil and Color Coated Steel Coilare not just two price options for the same inquiry. Galvanized coil is usually discussed as the zinc-coated substrate route. Color Coated Coil is discussed when the buyer also needs a painted surface, color, gloss, texture, and appearance control.
That difference changes what a supplier needs to check before quotation: base material, coating system, coil thickness, width, color standard, top and back paint, final profile, packing, and destination.
1. Start With the Material Stage
A galvanized coil inquiry normally starts with the metallic coating and substrate. Buyers usually confirm grade, thickness, width, zinc coating, Surface Treatment, spangle requirement, coil weight, and whether the coil will be formed, painted, or processed later.
A color coated coil inquiry starts one stage later. The buyer still needs to confirm the base material, but the quotation also has to cover the paint system and visible finish. If the order is for roofing sheets or cladding panels that already need a finished color, this route is usually the cleaner RFQ starting point.
2. Confirm the Substrate Before Discussing Color
For color coated coil, do not begin with color alone. First confirm whether the base is GI, GL, or another approved substrate. Then confirm thickness, width, coating type, top paint thickness, back paint thickness, surface finish, and the color reference such as a RAL number or approved sample.
This matters because two red coils can look similar in a picture while using different substrates, paint systems, back coatings, or coil weights. For RFQ work, the substrate and coating route should be written before appearance preference is treated as final.
3. Match the Coil Route to the Final Roofing Product
If the buyer is purchasing raw material for later profiling, the inquiry can stay at coil level. If the buyer is already planning finished roofing sheets, tile profiles, or installation-ready roofing materials, share the profile drawing, effective width, sheet length, color, packing method, and project destination together.
For roofing-tile style orders, the Metal Tile path may be a better continuation than treating the inquiry as coil only. The useful question is not only "GI or PPGI?" but also whether the buyer needs coil supply, profiled sheet supply, or a finished roofing product discussion.
4. What To Send Before RFQ
- Product route: galvanized coil, color coated coil, roofing sheet, or metal tile.
- Base material: GI, GL, cold-rolled base, or another confirmed substrate.
- Thickness, width, coil weight, and quantity.
- Coating details: zinc or Al-Zn coating for substrate; paint system, top/back paint, gloss, texture, and color reference for color coated coil.
- Final use: roofing sheet, wall cladding, metal tile, appliance panel, or other application.
- Packing, destination, and any inspection or document requirement.
Choose the Route Before Comparing Prices
A clear Steel Coil RFQ separates material route from finished appearance. If the order is for unpainted substrate or later processing, start with galvanized coil details. If the order needs color, gloss, texture, and visible surface consistency, start with color coated coil details.
Before requesting a quotation, send the intended product route, substrate, thickness, width, coating or paint requirement, color reference, final profile, quantity, packing note, and destination. That gives the supplier enough information to compare the right route instead of comparing two incomplete coil descriptions.
