Perforated Metal Sheet RFQ: Confirm the Hole Pattern Before Pricing
A Perforated Metal sheet quotation cannot be compared from sheet size and thickness alone. Hole shape, hole size, pitch, pattern direction, unperforated margins, material, finish, and packing can change the item being priced.
The practical starting point is a drawing or pattern schedule. If airflow, filtration, acoustic, screening, appearance, or load behavior matters to the project, include the required value or acceptance basis as a buyer input. The supplier can review manufacturability and quotation scope, but the article does not replace project design or performance verification.
1. Name the Base Material and Sheet Format
Start by stating whether the inquiry is for carbon steel, stainless steel, Galvanized Steel, aluminum, or another confirmed material. Add the material grade or purchaser specification only when it is defined for the order.
For Perforated Metal Mesh, confirm thickness, finished sheet width and length, quantity, flat sheet or formed-panel format, and whether the edges need to remain unperforated. If the substrate is purchased separately or belongs to a larger flat-steel package, keep the Steel Plate line item and the perforation scope clearly connected.
2. Draw the Hole Instead of Naming It Loosely
Round, square, slotted, hexagonal, louvered, and decorative openings are different pattern and tooling routes. A phrase such as small round holes or ventilation slots is not enough for a controlled quotation.
Show the hole diameter or slot dimensions, orientation, corner detail where relevant, and whether the pattern is straight, staggered, or custom. For nonstandard geometry, attach a dimensioned drawing or CAD file and identify the drawing revision.
3. Confirm Pitch, Pattern Direction, and Open Area Requirement
Pitch should be stated as the center-to-center spacing in the required directions. The drawing should also show row direction, stagger angle when applicable, and the relationship between the pattern and the sheet edges.
If the project specifies an open-area percentage, include that value and its calculation or acceptance basis. Do not ask the supplier to infer a filtration, ventilation, acoustic, or screening result from a product name. Those outcomes depend on the full assembly and project conditions, not only the perforated sheet.
4. Define Margins, Borders, and Blank Zones
Many perforated sheets need solid borders, mounting strips, corner areas, or blank zones for bending and fastening. Mark each margin on the drawing and state whether opposite edges are equal or different.
Also identify any mounting holes, cutouts, notches, identification marks, or later forming areas. When the design needs a repeated custom pattern, the Punching scope should be reviewed together with the finished sheet drawing.
5. State the Edge, Flatness, and Finish Expectations
Punching can leave a direction to the burr and may affect sheet flatness, especially when the pattern is dense or margins are narrow. The RFQ should state the accepted burr direction, deburring requirement, visible face, flatness note, and any protective film or handling expectation.
Name the requested finish before quotation: mill finish, galvanized, painted, powder coated, anodized, or another project-specified route. If perforation happens before or after coating, make that sequence clear because exposed edges and final appearance may be reviewed differently.
6. What To Include in the RFQ
- Material and grade or purchaser specification when defined.
- Sheet thickness, finished width and length, quantity, and flat or formed format.
- Hole shape, diameter or slot dimensions, pitch, row arrangement, pattern direction, and drawing revision.
- Open-area requirement and calculation or acceptance basis when the project specifies one.
- Solid borders, edge margins, blank zones, mounting holes, cutouts, notches, and later forming areas.
- Burr direction, deburring, visible face, flatness, protective film, and appearance requirement.
- Surface route and whether perforation occurs before or after coating.
- Packing method, sheet separation, labels, pallet or crate requirement, destination, and document request.
Send the Pattern Drawing With the Inquiry
A useful perforated metal RFQ combines the base material, thickness, finished sheet size, hole geometry, pitch, pattern direction, margins, quantity, finish, packing, and destination on the same drawing or schedule.
For a custom pattern, attach the dimensioned drawing or CAD file and identify the controlled revision. That gives the supplier enough information to review tooling, sheet layout, processing sequence, packing, and quotation scope without guessing the intended pattern.
