Steel Grating vs Expanded Metal Mesh: Which Walkway Surface Fits the Job?
For walkway, platform, stair tread, trench cover, and maintenance access orders, buyers often compare Steel Grating with Expanded Metal Mesh. The useful first question is not which surface looks stronger in a photo. It is how the surface will be supported, loaded, drained, cleaned, and fixed on site.
That choice affects quotation details such as bearing bar size, sheet thickness, opening pattern, panel size, surface finish, edge treatment, packing, and cutting requirements. If those points are not separated, two suppliers may quote different product routes under the same "metal walkway" request.
1. Start With Support, Not Only Surface Pattern
A walkway surface is part of a support system. Before comparing prices, confirm the span, frame support, fixing method, expected traffic, drainage need, and whether the project drawing already names a product route. These details help decide whether a bar grating panel or a sheet-based mesh is the better starting point for the inquiry.
If the drawing includes load or slip requirements, keep those as project inputs for supplier and engineering review. They should be confirmed against the project design rather than treated as a generic product promise.
2. Use Steel Grating When Bearing Bars Are Part of the Design
Steel Grating is usually discussed by bearing bar type and size, bearing bar spacing, cross bar spacing, panel size, surface finish, and whether serrated or plain bars are needed. This route is commonly reviewed for industrial flooring, trench covers, stair treads, ramps, and platform access areas.
For RFQ preparation, do not send only the word "grating." Add the panel size, bearing bar direction, support span, finish requirement such as hot-dip galvanized or painted, edge banding if required, clip or fixing note, and destination packing requirement.
3. Use Expanded Metal Mesh When a Sheet-Based Opening Fits Better
Expanded metal mesh is produced by slitting and stretching sheet material into a connected diamond opening. Buyers often discuss it when the project needs a sheet-based surface, guard, screen, ventilation panel, platform insert, or architectural mesh route rather than separate bearing bars.
For this route, confirm material, thickness, strand width, opening size, sheet size, flattened or raised type, surface finish, and whether the sheet needs cutting, framing, bending, or packing as flat sheets.
4. Do Not Treat Perforated Sheet as the Same Option
Perforated Metal Mesh can look close to expanded metal in a quick product search, but the manufacturing route and RFQ details are different. Perforated mesh is a punched or laser-cut sheet with hole shape, hole diameter, pitch, thickness, and sheet size as key quotation fields.
If the project needs exact hole layout, airflow, acoustic panels, filters, machine guards, or decorative sheets, check whether the inquiry should move to perforated sheet instead of grating or expanded metal.
5. What To Confirm Before RFQ
- Product route: steel grating, expanded metal mesh, Perforated Metal mesh, or another confirmed surface.
- Application: walkway, platform, stair tread, trench cover, machine guard, ventilation panel, or screen.
- Drawing details: span, support frame, panel size, sheet size, fixing method, and edge treatment.
- Product-specific fields: bearing bar size and spacing for grating; thickness, strand width, and opening size for expanded metal; hole shape and pitch for perforated sheet.
- Material and surface finish: Carbon Steel, stainless steel, galvanized, painted, powder coated, or another confirmed finish.
- Quantity, packing method, destination, and any inspection or document requirement.
Confirm the Product Route Before Comparing Unit Prices
A practical inquiry starts by naming the surface route and the support condition together. If the order is a bearing-bar platform or trench cover, prepare the grating details first. If it is a sheet-based diamond opening or guard panel, prepare the expanded metal details first.
Before requesting a quotation, send the drawing, product route, size range, opening or spacing requirement, surface finish, quantity, packing note, and destination. That gives the supplier enough information to compare the correct product route before pricing.
